Giro d'Italia on television
Throughout the month of May the focus of the cycling world will centre on Italy as the 100th edition of Giro d'Italia courses the length and breadth of the country, turning its villages and cities pink as la corsa rosa heads towards Milan.
After setting of on its 3,572.2 kilometre – or 2,220 miles in old money – journey from Sardinia, the travelling circus that is the Giro heads to Sicily for stages four and five before arriving on the mainland.
Once over the water, the peloton will work its way up the spine of the country before a final, hopefully dramatic, week in the mountains decides the eventual winner of the maglia rosa, or pink jersey awarded to the race leader.
One of the highlights of the final week will come when the riders tackle the Cima Coppi – the Cima Coppi, incidentally, is highest point of the race where the first rider to reach this point is awarded a cash bonus – during stage 16, the 227km brute from Rovetta to Bormio that includes one climb up and over the Mortirolo Pass and two ascents of the behemoth that is the Stelvio. The great man – Fausto Coppi – we think, would approve.
Those with subscriptions to Eurosport are in luck, the self-styled 'home of cycling' will be broadcasting every day, live, all the way from Italy.
